The handheld gaming market has matured faster than anyone predicted. What started as a niche experiment with the original Steam Deck in 2022 has grown into a legitimate product category with multiple serious contenders. Two devices have emerged as the primary alternatives for portable PC gaming: Valve's Steam Deck and ASUS's ROG Ally lineup. Both offer compelling reasons to choose them, but they approach handheld gaming from fundamentally different angles—and the right choice depends entirely on what matters most to you.

Display and Screen Quality

The display is where you'll notice the most immediate difference between these handhelds. The Steam Deck OLED features a 7.4-inch, 1280×800p touchscreen HDR OLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate and 1,000 nits peak brightness. While it maintains the same 1280 x 800 resolution as the original Steam Deck, the OLED panel is brighter, slightly larger, has deeper blacks, and goes up to a 90 Hz refresh rate.

The ROG Ally X takes a different approach. The Ally X launched at $799 with a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, an 80Wh battery, and a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS display. The Ally X cranks brightness all the way to 500 nits. A higher brightness allows the Ally X to clearly display the action on screen when in challenging brighter environments like the great outdoors without losing access to contrast or 100% of the sRGB color space.

This is a crucial trade-off: the Steam Deck OLED has superior color and contrast with its OLED technology, but the ROG Ally has a 7-inch display with 120Hz refresh rate and 16:9 aspect ratio at 1920 x 1080 resolution, and it's far brighter than the Steam Deck's 169.7 nits in comparable testing. If you game outdoors frequently, the Ally X's brightness advantage matters. If image quality is your priority, the Steam Deck OLED's OLED panel delivers better colors and blacks.

Processing Power and Performance

The Steam Deck OLED uses a 6nm "Sephiroth" AMD APU with a Quad-core Zen 2 CPU with 8 threads @ 2.4–3.5 GHz. The ROG Ally X is powered by the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor with 24GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM.

Raw performance isn't comparable—the Ally X is significantly more powerful. The Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, 80Wh battery, and 1080p 120Hz display combine to deliver the most powerful portable gaming experience available. However, power doesn't always translate to real-world advantage. The Windows overhead, the weight, the price, and the battery life limitations all work against casual use. For that audience, the Steam Deck OLED is a better fit.

Operating System and Game Compatibility

This is where the philosophical difference between the two devices becomes apparent. The Steam Deck runs a version of the Linux operating system, highly modified into a custom distribution called "SteamOS". Since most PC games are made for Windows, Valve, in partnership with Codeweavers, created Proton—a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run under Linux. The platform supports over 30,000 different games and counting. According to data from SteamDB, there are 30,023 officially registered games on Steam marked as "reviewed" or "playable" on the Steam Deck or SteamOS.

The ROG Ally X runs Windows 11, which means 100% of PC games work natively. That single fact transforms its game library into something the Steam Deck fundamentally cannot replicate: every game on every PC launcher works natively, Xbox Game Pass runs without workarounds, and competitive shooters blocked by anti-cheat on SteamOS launch without issue.

However, the practical reality is more nuanced. Most mainstream games work well on Steam Deck through Proton. The gap matters primarily for online competitive games with anti-cheat systems and exclusive titles on non-Steam launchers. For players who just want to play their Steam library, compatibility is no longer a meaningful concern.

Battery Life

The Steam Deck battery lasts approximately 2 to 8 hours in real-world use, depending on various factors such as the games played and settings used. On average, users can expect around 3 to 4 hours of gameplay for demanding titles. Lighter games may extend this time to 6 to 8 hours.

ROG Ally X realistic battery life runs from 2.5 hours under a demanding AAA title at 17W / 13W Manual Mode to 4 to 5 hours in indie titles at 8W TDP. Battery life in demanding games is still short enough that you will want a charger nearby for most gaming sessions. The Steam Deck OLED, with its less powerful but more efficient hardware, delivers 1.5 to 3 hours in similarly demanding titles, but its typical gaming session lasts 30 to 45 minutes longer due to lower TDP.

Both handhelds require charging for long gaming sessions if you're playing demanding AAA titles, but the Steam Deck edges ahead due to its lower power consumption.

Price and Value

Steam Deck OLED now costs $789–$949 after a May 2026 price increase. The ROG Ally X includes 1 TB of NVMe storage, an M.2 2280 slot instead of M.2 2230, 24 GB of LPDDR5X-7500 RAM, a larger battery, and other improvements, priced at $799.

The price gap has narrowed significantly. The Steam Deck OLED now costs nearly as much as the ROG Ally X, making the decision less about affordability and more about which approach suits your gaming style.

The Verdict

Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want a straightforward handheld experience, prefer SteamOS's streamlined interface, need longer battery life for lighter games, or primarily play through Steam. It's the more refined handheld for traditional gaming.

Choose the ROG Ally X if you need native Windows game compatibility, play competitive online shooters, want maximum performance for demanding AAA titles, use Xbox Game Pass, or prefer a brighter display for outdoor play. It's the more powerful machine for PC gamers who don't mind Windows's friction on handhelds.

Neither choice is wrong—they simply represent two different philosophies about what handheld gaming should be.
