The Distance Rule: Your Seating Matters Most
The distance between your couch and TV is the primary driver of TV sizing. The recommended distance to a TV depends on the resolution, screen size, and viewing angle.
For modern 4K TVs—which are now the industry standard—the math is straightforward. When watching your 4K screen, the ideal place to sit is between 1-1.5 times the screen size of your TV. In practical terms, if you have a 65-inch 4K TV, you should sit between 65-97.5 inches away to get the best picture. That converts to roughly 5.4 to 8 feet.
Here's why resolution matters. At this distance, your eyes cannot tell apart the individual pixels, so you'll be viewing the image on the screen in the same detail as you would in real life. Because UHD pixels are so small, it's hard to pick out individual pixels even if you're right in front of the screen.
If your room forces you to sit farther away, that's fine. Even when you sit farther away than the distances recommended, a 4K TV will still look pretty sharp.
For older 1080p TVs, the ideal viewing distance ratio is between around 1.5 and 2.5 times the diagonal width of the screen. You need to sit farther back to avoid seeing individual pixels.
Quick Sizing by Seating Distance
Rather than do algebra, use this rule of thumb: measure your seating distance in feet, multiply by 9 to 11, and that's a good TV-size range in inches.

THX recommends that for the best TV viewing angle, the viewer's line of sight should be at the center of the screen. If that's not possible—for instance if you've mounted your TV above a console table—they suggest keeping the angle gradient above or below the center at 15 degrees or less.
In practical terms, the optimal TV viewing height is when the middle of the TV screen is eye level. Of course, eye level changes from person to person, depending on the couch you're sitting on and whether you're sitting or laying down. For most people, the average eye level of a U.S. adult seated in a relaxed manner is around 24 inches above the seat. The average sofa seat height is 17 inches. Based on that information, the optimal viewing height for the average U.S. person is 42 inches.
Resolution and Viewing Distance
The resolution debate matters less than many assume, and only under specific conditions.
At distances closer than 1.5 times the screen diagonal, 4K is noticeably sharper than 1080p. For a 65-inch TV, that threshold is about 8.1 feet. Sitting farther than that, most viewers cannot distinguish the two resolutions.
At typical living room distances (8-12 feet), a 65-inch 4K TV will look better than a 55-inch 8K TV because screen size affects immersion more than pixel density at that distance.
The practical takeaway: if you sit within 8 feet, 4K noticeably outperforms 1080p. Beyond that, the difference becomes academic. Bigger screens and better content matter more than chasing pixel density you can't see.
Room Type Changes Everything
The type of room and its layout affect ideal sizing in ways pure math doesn't capture.
For example, in a living room with the TV mounted over a fireplace, a further viewing distance helps to alleviate neck strain and accommodate room aesthetics. On the other hand, in a media room dedicated to movies, sports, or gaming, you might prefer to shorten the viewing distance for an optimal viewing experience.
Bedrooms typically have shorter viewing distances (5-9 feet from foot of bed). At 7 feet using the 40° angle, a 50-55 inch 4K TV is ideal. Going larger puts the screen past your peripheral vision and makes the TV dominate the room.
How to Measure and Decide
Start with your seating position. Measure the distance from your main viewing spot to the wall where the TV will mount or sit. Don't guess—use a tape measure.
Next, account for how your room's layout constrains that distance. If your couch is against a wall or your room is narrow, you may not have flexibility. In a typical NYC living room, you can't always sit as far back as the chart wants you to. Prewar layouts are narrow, the couch backs up to a wall or a walkway, and the distance from sofa to TV wall is often a fixed 6 to 8 feet. You can't move the wall, so you size the TV to the seat.
