Understanding HDR: The Basics
HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a signal with a higher dynamic range than usual, referring to the range of luminosity between the brightest area and the darkest area of a scene or image. Think of it as an expansion of what your TV can show you on screen.
HDR is a technology that allows for a wider and deeper range of colors, better contrast, and improved detail preserved in bright and dark areas of the video stream. Normal, non-HDR video signals and TVs are known as "SDR" or "standard dynamic range", and will look comparatively muddy, less vibrant, and less natural overall.

The Main HDR Streaming Formats
Not all HDR is created equal. Several competing formats exist, each with different capabilities and device support.
HDR10
HDR10 was created by the Consumer Technology Association as a free and open standard that any manufacturer can use at no cost. Almost all HDR video streams and media have an HDR10 stream, so it's probably going to play on every HDR TV.
HDR10 only has "static metadata," which means that the same "setting" of HDR is used throughout a single movie or TV episode, even if that setting is inappropriate for a particular scene. This limitation doesn't make it bad—it's widely compatible and delivers a noticeable quality bump over standard video.
HDR10+
Faced with the limitations of HDR10, Samsung created the HDR10+ standard, which adds "dynamic metadata," or the ability to change the HDR settings between scenes in the same video stream. HDR10+ also improves on HDR10's color depth and brightness representation.
The main difference between HDR10 and HDR10+ is that the latter includes dynamic metadata that can change the HDR settings per scene, whereas the former includes static HDR information for the entire program. This scene-by-scene optimization can result in better detail preservation in challenging lighting conditions.
Dolby Vision
Dolby Vision can change information such as color and brightness dynamically, thus making the viewing experience more immersive. Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and many other services offer most of their HDR content in Dolby Vision, and almost every UHD Blu-ray with premium mastering includes a Dolby Vision layer.
HDR10+ is the standard on Amazon Prime Video, but now also appears on Apple TV+, select Netflix titles/devices, and has expanded to Disney+ (including 1,000+ Hulu titles).
Which Streaming Services Offer HDR?
Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other major streaming platforms like Hulu, Paramount+, Rakuten TV, Apple TV+, and Disney+ offer HDR streaming for select titles.
Recent developments have expanded HDR availability. Samsung Electronics announced that Prime Video will be the first streaming service to offer HDR10+ Advanced on supported titles globally beginning August 2026. Meanwhile, Peacock claims it will be the first platform in the industry to support Dolby Vision 2 HDR and Dolby AC-4, giving it an edge over Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV, with the integration anticipated to launch later in 2026.
What You Need to Watch HDR Streaming
Getting HDR streaming working in your home requires more than just signing up to a service—you need compatible hardware throughout your setup.
The TV: You need an Ultra HD TV or device that supports HDR, and a streaming service that offers HDR (like Amazon, Apple TV, or Netflix). Most newer TVs support at least basic HDR10, though premium formats like Dolby Vision or HDR10+ require newer, more expensive models.
The streaming device: Streaming devices like the Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K, NVIDIA Shield, and Amazon Fire TV Cube all explicitly support HDR. Older streaming sticks or boxes may not support HDR, so check compatibility before purchasing.
The cable: HDR requires an HDMI 2.0 port and HDMI 2.0a cable to get higher frame rates and 4k/Dolby Vision HDR support (HDMI 2.1 is now suggested for higher frame rates and next-gen 8k applications).
Your subscription: Netflix doesn't give you HDR unless you have an Ultra HD plan—the most expensive Netflix tier allowing you to download and watch on up to 4 screens at the same time; other tiers don't support HDR video. Other services may have similar requirements, so verify that your plan supports HDR before assuming you can access it.
The Practical Reality
HDR streaming does matter if you have the right equipment to showcase it. That said, your TV's inherent brightness and contrast capabilities matter more than format choice, and static HDR10 still looks dramatically better than standard definition, so don't skip HDR content just because you can't access Dolby Vision.
If you're watching on an older TV or using a basic streaming device, you may not notice a dramatic difference. But on modern televisions with decent brightness levels, HDR content delivers tangibly richer colors, better shadow detail, and more natural-looking images.
